Link tRussian Archeological text (1981) about Scythian Bows

by Eugene V. Chernenko

http://annales.info/skif/chernenk/chernenk.htm#bowmens

Also a text about Scythian Armor, and several Scythian related articles

I found this text through some obscure references in a discussion on Paleoplanet.

The book was written in 1981, and was published in a limited edition of 5000 copies in Russia. Since 1981, of course we've had a lot of revelations about the Scythian peoples and their bows, but if you're interested in the subject, give this a go with Google Translate.

When I Google translate to English, the Russian word for 'bow' is also the word of 'onion' which leads to some hilarious sentences!

I think this is the book where comma shaped harness ornaments are confused with English longbow horn tips. However, some of the illustrations are still hard to come by in modern publications and it was a valuable work in its time.

I think you're right Bede. It is worth reading from the "look how far we've come" historical perspective.

It is strange that the same bridles that supplied the "bow tips" in this book supplied the "thumb rings" that were found in Luristan. Misidentification is so easy and we all make mistakes.
