Regarding the loops, I used to make separate loop strings and serve the loose ends down like the Dresden strings. It was very convenient. I stopped doing it when I acquired an original string with with tied off raw silk loops. I am beginning to wonder if the completely served strings with served loops and knots were not a military style since they have two practical advantages.
Neither the loops nor the strings will become entangled if they are taken off the bow and completely served strings are stiffer and appear to be more efficient if they are not too heavy.
