Steaming core after sizing???

Post by JakobKurt » Tue Feb 26, 2013 7:02 pm

Hello all! I am new to this forum and new to composite bow making, my name is Jacob and im from New Zealand (living in Germany). I have been shooting bows since i was little (never touched a compound! :P ) and now i am really excited to make a composite bow of my own to shoot!

I am at the moment constructing my first bow (magyar style) and have come across a little snag that i need some advise on.

I have prepared the core and handle to be glued together, and have already sized them, the problem is that the handle angle is at 150? and the core is still dead straight.
I know that the general rule is to not overheat the hide glue because it looses its viscosity, so now you see my problem.... will it still be okay to steam the bamboo core for a minute or so to bend it to the 150? grip? would the final coating of thick glue hold it ok?

Thank you in advance, Any help is greatly appreciated!
(sorry if this has already been discussed, but i couldnt find it anywhere...?)

Jacob

I'd say there will not be much glue left if you steam it. The sizing that is left on it will probably also stick to whatever you bend the bamboo around. I'd steam, bend, scrape the surface and size again.

Welcome, by the way! :)

Hello and welcome! :)
Bamboo is very flexible, I think you can the glued directly on your wrist!
At worst, a little heated with a heat gun to get some form before!

Thank you both for your advice. i now have a bit of an idea of what to do.
I think i will scrape everything i can off while its dry, steam it, scrape anything else i can get off, then bend it to the shape of the handle... Hopefully i can get the handle off again to size and glue it properly.

i know bamboo is flexible, but ive tried to bend it with a little dry heat before and the fibers started very slightly to "let go of each other... so i want to give it a good steaming...

and thanks for the welcome! :D

Also another question for when the time comes...

What can be done to prevent large amounts of twist (uncorrectable) during and after seasoning?

i have seen and heard of peoples bows that have twisted so much that they have to take them apart... what should be done to stop this happening?
