Michael,

The Kulikovo Pole bow reconstruction looks roughly and made with inaccuracy for me. It seems to be that they took Novgorod bow and added to construction the bone and deer horn plates occurred so often in steppes. As far as I know this bow does not repeat any of excavated original.
The bow wrapped with birch-bark, the grip and end plate made of bone or deer horn.

That’s all what I know about this bow reconstruction.
Not too much.

Thanx a lot, Gleb,

this reconstrution really makes me wonder, cause I?ve been in Novosibirsk(invited by the Russian Academy of Science) for to examine the olon kurin gol- excavations. The Russian archaeologists permitted me to study other excavated parts of bows. They?ve excavated thousands!
But I can?t remember a bow looking like the Kulikovo- bow.

Dusan!

Yes, it’s very interesting quiver for me. How should we name it (maybe orbed-flat bottom closed quiver?). Any additional information on this quiver?

On the second pictures from that Korean museum Taklamakan you posted – the arrows laying on looking-quiver object. May anybody have the better picture&

On the orbed-flat bottom quiver: It’s remind me the quiver depicted on Polovets statues once standing in Russian, Ukrainian and North Caucasus steppes. Please take a look on the new theme on them I opened (only for comfort as in this theme too many pages already).

The third quiver is a Tibetan quiver. There are several in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They probably include parts that date back to the Yuan Dynasty.

Note the bow on page 3 below the caption; "Uzbek national muzeum, terible if this horsarchers country have only fue bows in museum and more from them are chinese" and the next two after are Hunza from Afghanistasn. This is only one of three I know of.

Two other pics of the quiver in the Silk Road museum in South Korea. A Mongol invasion era archery set like the straitish one now in Houston, can we call it the HMNS bows and arrows as there is absolutley no provenience on the bows. The only difference between this quiver and the HMNS one is the round top on the Houston one and the square top {Now missing ) on the Silk Road one.

There are supposedly plenty more Central Asian bows in storage in Russian museums.

Good comment on Chinese bows though. There ARE more of these in CA museums.

I have noticed that some of these pictures show the bow gripped below what we would call the handle. By that I mean the centre of the setback.
