For those who can't find the bows on the site, I will explain:

go to:

[url] http://www.hermann-historica.com/

next: on the left under recent auctions, tick on " auction 46 "

next: of the four visible cataloges, tick on " antique Arms & Armour........."

next: enter into the searchbar the German word " Reflexbogen " and search

Now you should have found it.

(This isn't meant as an advertisement of the site, but just to view the bows)

Thank you.

Btw, I note "breite" as preceding centimetric measurements. The German language dictionary I have indicates "breit" to mean wide. Do the Germans use the word "breit" (or "breite") to refer to bow length?

MJuingong,
Normally what they would say in reference to lenght, would be"L?nge".
I don't kow why at this point they used"Breite". What they meant was lenght
of the unstrung bow anyway. Its a sort of spelling mistake.

I have noticed in some older German publications that they measure the length of the bow as the widest distance the unstrung bow covers. This is meaningless because the reflex of the bow varies with usage and storage conditions. It is good for working out how big a box you need to ship the bow in.

It is possible the terms may have become confused because someone was using older books for research.

You are right. For some reason they do not really care a lot.......
On the other hand, ignorance can be good as you can often find old bows in
good condition at a very reasonable price at German auctions.

It seems "Breite" means "span" in this case.

Adam, merhaba to you.
Nice to meet you here. I have been chatting quiet a lot on ATARN these
days -- and I've learnt a lot........

(There is a word for "span" in German which is "Spanne" or "Spannbreite")

Greetings & Salaam

Mughal bow

Post by Alam ed Din, Adnan » Sat Mar 25, 2006 5:40 pm

There is a mughal bow for sale(online catalogue-auction # 50)
http://www.hermann-historica.com/
Open auction # 50 and enter "REFLEXBOGEN" into the search bar.
(If one is interested in arrows, one may enter"PFEILE" as well -- they got some Mughal arrows for sale.......)
It says only the back of the bow is covered with thin leather while the belly side looks as if white horn has been used.
Also a turkish quiver & arrows are for sale here......

Sorry Thomas,
I'll explain it better....the search funtion will only be there after you opened a catalogue
1 On the left, under current auctions, open online catalogues
2 Then open the first of the catalogues:Antique Arms & Armour,
Antiquities, Miscellanea
3 The search bar is at the top of the page
4 Enter in German ie. "Reflexbogen" or "Pfeile" into the search bar.

This is the translation of the German text with the Indo-Persian:
Indo-Persian bow, 16./19. century. Hunting bow made of horn and sinew glued together. The outer side is covered with leather and has fine golden paint over brownish black colour, the belly side is made of polished horn with two string brigdes of bone.Wooden nocks with signsture in arabic script. Very good condition. Span 68cm.

As far as I know one can request extra pictures for an item.(they turned me down twice). But I think its possible.
