Reproduction Chinese Horn Bow

Post by Thomas Duvernay » Thu Oct 28, 2010 2:27 pm

Back in 1999, Stephen Selby and I had the Korean bowyer, Geuk-hwan Park, craft us true horn bows in the Chinese style (an antique Chinese bow Stephen brought was used as a model). As I have not really used the one I got (it was strung and one arrow sent from it back in '99), I decided to put it up for sale to someone who would appreciate it. I am not exactly sure of the draw weight, but I think it is only a medium weight bow (maybe in the 40# or so range)--maybe Stephen remembers what they were. It is in pristine condition. As Master Park is paralyzed (since 2002), there will never be another like it.

It is 62.5" (nock to nock--65.5" tip to tip), with a 1-1/4" limb width

Ray skin above and below the handle

It does not require preheating to brace, but does need dojigae (tepliks)

$1,400 (USD), including shipping

WOW! That is one pretty bow! I'm sure it's a real performer too.

Thomas, that?s a very unique bow. Hybrid Chinese/Korean bow.
If I had the money and were heavier in draw weight...A friend could be interested on this. I need to ask him.
Because of the high reflex, I?m sure it would need to be heated to balance it.
Thomas, could you post a picture of the strung bow?
If there are cracks in the horn, does it matter?

Stephen, what?s your opinion on these bows as an owner?

The bow is sold, pending. However, let me try and answer your questions.

I will not string the bow because I do not have a dojigae for this type of bow.

I see a lot of horn with hairline cracks used on bows, so I think it depends on the crack. Maybe Adam can weigh in on that one.

The person who buys this bow needs to understand (and not blame Tom) that it is a hybrid, and not a totally successful one at that. Basically the long siyahs attached to what is basically a Korean Gahk Gung gives a very unstable result. The new owner will need to take extraordinary care when bracing and shooting it.

I cannot help but notice the smooth curves and precise workmanship. This looks like the thin siyahs Stephen was talking about in older bows. But I assume by the discussion that he does not consider this a faithful copy of the prototype. A kind of Korean version on a Qing bow?

Stephen: Did you shoot your Geuk-hwan Park bow? Was it a near copy of this one?
