Three New Quivers

Post by jack farrell » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:27 pm

New quivers for friends and family. On the left, a loose copy of Stephen's Qing Chinese palace guard quiver. On the right, one from a book on Persian miniature paintings. Both have pockets on the front and arrow separators inside. They are built on thin pine slats cut out in profile. Glue and nail. No sewing. -j-

Lovely work, as usual, Jack. :D
What about some bow-holsters...?

By the way, in some exhibitions here, I have seen artificial stingray skin. That would look fantastic on your quivers. (You might not want artificial materials, but the stingray is endangered and you can't export it.)

Stephen; I have some tanned salmon skin which is interesting, unusual. Shouldn't be prohibited anywhere.

The bowcase which I traded to Soon turned out to be alot of work. On an old post. Almost everything good takes time. -j-

Redhawk; Most all of these arrows have 4 fletch, X. The best possible arrangement for me. -j-

Jack,

If you want sting-ray (real stingray) It is readily available and not illegal to own or import into the US you being in Texas would have no problem getting it.

I have a few I bought over the summer. If you want some I can get you the address of the importer I buy mine from.

I agree with Stephen that would look pretty nice on one of those quivers.

Ray; Thanks for the offer. I have some. I put some on a bow once and that also looked fine. But I am always looking for a good idea.

A friend gave me some pics he took in a museum in Almaty, Kazakhstan. There was a good quiver made with tooled leather, interesting.

A post on this site showing an old Turkish quiver featured brass nails with 12 pointed stars. Some are being sold at Charlebois Fabrics in Ms with 8 pointed stars which they sent me. 50 cents each, kind of rich. The origional quiver had 50! Mine won't need so many, I'm sure. As for the rest of the brasses, one would need to be wealthy or more dedicated than I to have it all.

So many toys, so little time. -j-

Jack,

Funny you mentioned putting it on a bow.

The guy I get mine from sells it in raw hide form too. He even has some that has the spikes still in tact running the length of the hide's centerline.

I have considered using that for backing on a bow rather than deer rawhide. It would look absolutely wild to have those 3/8 to 1/4" spikes running up the middle of each limb.

One would have to be real careful how he handled the bow. It could be dangerous just to reach out and grab it but it would look really cool.

This is a new quiver I just finished for a left handed lady in our archery group, the backyard archers. It is silk brocade over leather over a wood frame with brass tacks and gold tone earrings. I realize now that I have mixed a military style with a court style and the combination is a little odd.

I will also give this other Tibetan type quiver to another lady in the group who has also made a valiant effort. She treks in Nepal so this seems appropriate. Leather over a wood frame, brass and pewter tacks, real Turkomen conchos and an old Tibetan medallion in tin over copper, very tarnished.
