Hello to Atarn-

Post by Dan Winheld » Wed Feb 06, 2013 5:47 pm

I have just recently registered with the ATARN forum- already know a few members through both actual & virtual exchanges. (Hello Justin, Pat, and Murat!).

I have been training in basic thumb draw techniques, RH & LH, for the past 7-1/2 years on any of my bows that tolerate it- old Grayling Bears with the dual shelves filed off, my two shelfless HH Wesley American semi-longbows, and- until they both broke- my two Asiatic Composite "interpretations" in the standard glass-wood-glass ubiquitous "sandwich" format.

New practice wrinkle: Left thumb only, so far; a plain jewelry ring- no lip, or thumb pad protection, up to a 45#@30" draw- really cleans up the release- or the thumb gets whacked quite painfully!

Question for bow modification that has bugged me over the years- Can a sinew layer be successfully applied to the back of an already built, fiberglass backed bow? I have one old cheapie in a sort "Asiatic" looking style. I would like to raise draw weight by about 10 lbs. and protect the back from delamination by sending it in closer to the neutral zone. My other Asiatic Comp. style bows (I will NOT call them "horse" bows!) failed from the fiberglass/wood core design not being up to the standard of traditional materials for tolerating the stresses of short, reflexed, siyah built bows.

Thanks & Greetings!

Dan

I'm just a lazy, very slow child! Of course you don't like the term "horsebow". You already own two beautiful bicycle bows-

-Scroll down to the videos!

My bows must all be called Laundry Room bows- because virtually all of my practicing takes place down there.

But I am tempted, esp. since Justin lives up here and he has kindly let me try a few out. The Ming Moon I was my favorite, but I am not quite ready to buy any more new bows just yet.

Ha yeah bicycle bows. I like that.

Must be nice up there. I am the only one here shooting with a thumbring except maybe some old Korean guys but I haven't met them.

I do like the Mings and it seems really well made.

Generally modern material bows cannot be made with sufficient reflex to have the sinew work efficiently. If you increase the reflex as the sinew dries, the belly of the bow will most likely crack and be destroyed. If you don't increase the reflex, the sinew will not store much energy and the bow will just have heavier limbs.
