Hi, I am from London, England. I love archery; I am a professional woodworker, mainly construction and furniture, restoration, reconstruction, but also luthier, classical guitars and sometimes other modern fretted instruments, and more recently bowyer of self-bows and soon to be horn sinew composite maker .

I've been collecting info lately too, in regards the all-wood Western Scythian bows. I'm going to build me one and wrap it in silk. But first, the bending jig. I want to make a jog something like Kiviljo's Akkadian jig. I live on a small sailboat and don't have a lot of room. The bow I want to copy the profile of is 112cm long and the depth is on the order of 6m, so I can use a length of 2x6 cut out to the profile shape, and stand it on a couple of legs.

:D making a jig is a lot of work for a one-off project, I would be tempted to try free-hand bending over a heat source...plus clamps, ropes and wedges on a board for the stubborn bits...I am sorting out a workshop for myself at this time, so I too have little space ATM.My best wishes, Ati.

Actually the jig won't take much at all -- a nominal 2x8 (1.5" x 7.5"), with a single bandsaw cut to the chosen bow's profile, and then drilling a bunch of peg holes and cutting pegs that hold the rubber intertube strips which clamp the laths in place while the dry. Won't take but an hour or so. I know a bicycle shop that will give me all the dead innertubes I want/need.

Car tubes are heavier. Buy a new one. And I like 1/2" ply for forms because of the low expense and stiff result. 2 or three thicknesses glued together.

They still make inner tubes for car tires? Hmmmmm. Well OK then. I ended up with a piece of treated 2x8 for the jig. Plenty stiff and heavy. Ply would have been better I suppose. But I can always turn the jig remnants into a crossbow tiller!

Hello Jack,
your campaign for the promotion of the inner-tube curve clamp has won another convert; I have purchased some inner tubes and added them to the tool-kit!

Hi Uli, pleased to meet you, I am enjoying the composite bow making, for sure. I hope that I can contribute something useful to the community, have been studying the Assyrian British Museum carvings, hope to recreate the bows & arrows&quivers described. Regards, Atti.
