Omnogorov bow

Post by Redbow » Thu Aug 01, 2013 9:42 am

Hello,
Doing some research on atarnet and elsewhere, about historical bows in actual Mongolia i don't find any picture of the famous Omnogorov original bow.
I only have found two pictures of its reproduction.
Any picture or detailed description of the original would be welcome

Thank you

J?r?me,
Several photographs have been published. The article in the Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries had photos as well as the diagram with measurements. The bow, as I remember it, was twisted considerably.

Bede,
I wish i could read the JSAA publication.
The published photos if there had any, are no longer on this forum.

Anyone can help ?

I know that in one of the threads here I put up a diagram based on the Omnogorov bow article in the JSA-A. If I find the original drawing I will repost it.

J?r?me,
I am sure that I have seen other illustrations aside from the JSA-A article. I should mention that the bow is very twisted around its longitudinal axis so photographs are less helpful than the reconstructions.

This is the photo sent to me by G. Menes of the bow found in Omnogov Province, Mongolia, and dated by a Japanese Lab to the late 1700's

These are the two photos Mr. Menes sent to me of the Omnogov bow find, that he took himself in the museum in Ulan Bataar, where he worked. The other was from a glossy hardback book on a Mongolin exhibit in Japan. McEwan inserted photos of his replica, instead of using these. Hope they help,
Sincerely, Wayne Alex

Wayne,
Good pictures.
Without talking to McEwen, I would guess that they would not have printed well in the Journal as it was being printed in those days. The requirements for illustrations submitted with articles were restrictive because of the printing process and limited photo manipulation processes available to the Journal. Later journals have been created with better facilities for colour reproductions.
