Mongol bows three styles

Post by Redbow » Wed Nov 30, 2016 9:44 am

Hi everyone,
In this article, published on Atarn a long time ago,
http://www.atarn.org/mongolian/mn_nat_a ... t_arch.htm

Munkhtsetseg says :

"The three styles of bow are
‘Gung’ – a deep form of bow based on the Manchu style;
‘Tömör’ (‘Iron’) and
Khagas (‘Half Horse’).
The ‘Gung’ style comes from the east of the country,
the ‘Iron’ style from our central, Khalkha area,
and the ‘Half Horse’ from the Western Uryankhai region."
I have been traveling in Mongolia but at the time was not aware of this and unfortunately didn't look carefully for this...
I would be grateful if anyone or mongol members here, could give more details about this, with pictures, historic background, specific features of these three styles of bows ?
thanks...Jérôme

I would suggest contacting the Mongolian National Sports Institute, which holds the copyright to the 1976 book by Baldandorj which she mentions as the source of the sketches she included in the article:

(The line drawing illustrations in this article are reproduced from a book on Mongolian national archery by Baldandorj published in 1976, with the kind permission of the Mongolian National Sports Institute which controls the copyright.)

I would bet that they have extensive descriptions of the three kinds of bows
