Kyudu Arrow holder or ?tight weave ? basket quiver

I was referring to yazutsu arrow holder that kyudu archery uses.
I think this is the proper name. otherwise I usually often get misunderstood.

My first questions is :

I would presume any? tight weave? type of basketry quiver must be coming from its mother country and is a Japan imports ? anybody doing?tight weave?type of basketry in U.s. ?

now why ? tight weave.?? ?Functionalwise,? Any important reasons for that?

There are many type of weaving, tight weave is the most difficult /labor intensive and expensive of all. but why use this ?

Anybody here knows why?

Hello Pete,

Normally a Kyudo-Quiver is a cubic wooden box with a network or with thin shelfs on the upper side to separate each arrow at the tip. Further up there is only a loop to bundle all arrow-shafts. The archer wears the quiver tight on his right hip and the arrows go along his back over his left shoulder. When he takes an arrow, he takes it nearby the tip (which is in the wooden box), lift it a little to get it out of the box and then draw it in direction of the tip out of the loop directly to the left (bow-) hand, which seices the arrow on the right side of bow and string. then he takes the nock and lead it to the string to nock it in. This technique is very fast.

here is Peter again. The quiver you mean: take a look in ATARN Japan/Kyudo, go to "The Meishin Kyudojo Homepage", ASAHI America you will find it in "Nocks, Quivers".
What I know, there is no necessity for the tight weaved Quivers. Its only beautiful, expensive and perfekt handcraft, what Japanese like. There are laquered Quivers too and even vinyl for daily use.
What I discribed in my first comment, were the Quivers of the Bushi or Samurai.

I thought it its meant for easy carrying,. All weather Transport in horseback perhaps Secured and More protective and Attractive too. ,besides available asian weavers are good at this kind of weave. - so it was just my guess.

We have that kind of weaving too here.folk Natives Talent unfortunately just being applied to all-weather bags and backpacks for the bush.

I was just thinking designing for a much simpler regular tight weave quiver for the archery world.

Glad to know you are in Austria- is there somebody or company there who deal mostly in kyudu parts and accessories. ? perhaps Germany and France too or anywhere in Europe.? just wondering

Hi Pete,

to practice Kyudo, we don?t need a Quiver for shooting. The ("tight weaved") Quiver is only to transport the arrows to the "Kyudojo" (hall of practice) or to keep them save at home etc.. Besides, this Quiver has maximum place for 8 arrows. The arrows are, in case of their extremely length (mine are 100cm) very expensive. Too, many arrows have feathers from birds of prey. You see, it makes sense to keep them save!
To practice Kyudo you take 2 arrows: 1st to shoot, is the "Haya" (seen from the nock, left winding feathers), 2nd is the "Otoya" (-"-, right winding feather) which is held in the right hand during shooting the Haya.
Usually you have a set of 4 arrows (2 Haya, 2 Otoya), because after shooting 4 arrows, you pick them up from the target.
So you see: this kind of Quiver, has no use for shooting. But, if you can produce it cheaper, in simular quality, could be a little business.
I practice Kyudo since 16 years and got my equipment from Japan. In the meantime some people in Europe produce good (fiberglass) Yumis, Arrows and (laquered) Quivers. Take a look at: www.yumi.hu .

This is precisely the technique that I developed to use an older-style Hungarian quiver with the arrowheads stored business-end up. It's quick, I agree.

If you watch yabusame archers drawing from the back of their hakama, you see the last part of the motion of drawing from the ebira quiver. They do not have to clear the box part.

Drawing from a closed quiver is similar, but faster from my experience. Depending on the angle of the quiver, the motion can be reduced to a simple motion. With skill, you can hide most of the drawing motion from your prey or your enemy.
