In Indonesian (and several related regional languages), the bow is called busur and the arrows panah. Archery is known as panahan while the act of shooting is called memanah (the me- prefix attached to the noun panah turns it into an active verbs.
With the great variety of local and regional languages in Indonesia, it's easy to understand why some of them use somewhat different terms for archery and its equipment. Gendawa, for example, is a common synonym for "busur" in Javanese languages, and in these languages the verb for archery takes the shorter form manah, which is a homonym for "heart"--perhaps a conscious reference to the use of archery as a tool for spiritual development.

Dear Stephen,Stephen Selby wrote:Aristotle,
In English, one word for 'poisonous' is 'toxic'. I understand that the English word is derived from Greek. Is there a Greek word for 'poisonous' that is related to the word for 'bow'? Any stories/ideas about that?
As you know, the base of modern Hellenic is the Homeric-times language. Aforementioned posted terms ( Archery=Τοξοβολία , Bow= Τόξον ) of mine belong to that Helenic much after Homeric; these terms belong actually to the pure Hellenic language shaped after Roman times.
The relevant terms during Homeric-times were: ΑRCHERY=ΤΟΞΙΚΗ (toxiki) and BOW=ΒΙΟΣ (vios).
Concerning the Homeric name of the Bow (ΒΙΟΣ) in Hellenic means "life". This is because ancient Hellenes cinsider the Bow as the basic "tool" supporting life itself. But, they had also in mind its deeper significance as a death-instrument. Because of this, "TΩ ΟΥΝ ΤΟΞΩ ΟΝΟΜΑ ΒΙΟΣ ΕΡΓΟΝ ΔΕ ΘΑΝΑΤΟΣ" mentioned Heraclitus : The name of the Bow means "life" but its work is the death!
After all above, of course, there is a relation in Homeric language between "toxic" and "Archery" as the common point is death. And, of course, "toxic" is related to Archery (ΤΟΞΙΚΗ-toxiki). You are right!
